Entrepreneurs are human too

Jan 11, 2021 | 0 comments

In 2019 I was lucky enough to attend a mastermind with Gary Vaynerchuk.

One thing he said which really landed for me was…people don’t want to watch any more how-to videos about building funnel and marketing strategies, they want to know how to fire family members who work in their business.

This was so profound for me nd I realised that people really want to know the things that nobody likes to talk about.

An entrepreneurial journey is not easy. It’s full of challenges, but how often do you hear people owning up to them?

How often do they say:

  • I have someone suing me because they think I didn’t deliver on my sales promise.
  • I’m in serious amounts of debt and not sure how to get out of it.
  • I’ve had 20 no’s in a row on my sales calls and that’s never happened to me before. What am I doing wrong?

We never hear it because people have shame around that type of thing.

It also happens in life outside of business, and we’re still reluctant to talk about it.

There’s an expectation that we should be confident and not share the things that are causing us to struggle. Perhaps we have insecurities around our boundaries or that it’s just too embarrassing.

Whatever the reason, I’m not encouraging people to share from a “poor me” perspective, because I think that’s unhelpful. I’m asking that you share from a place of “me too”.

As leaders or influencers people look up to us, so if we are able to share some of our challenges, we show that we’re just human and not too different from our followers.

I have a following of sorts, although I’m not an enormous influencer, and I think it’s important for people like me to admit that we struggle too, because we’re not perfect.

I’ve had situations where I’ve been in extreme debt in my business, I’ve made very bad deals and lost a lot of money. I’ve been in situations in business where clients have fired me and where I have fired clients. In fact anything you can think of that potentially could have gone wrong has gone wrong and that’s because this is the human experience.

There’s nothing to be ashamed about. No one in any of those situations was right or wrong. It was a shared joint conscious creation of that situation for whatever we needed at the time.

Because we don’t speak about it, entrepreneurs who are at the beginning of their journey think we have perfect lives. This is wrong and potentially a belief that causes many to give up before they even get started.

No human is perfect.
