✨🥳 I have been speaking this week about three valuable lessons I’ve learned from studying two Navy Seals, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

The final component I would like to share was learning about how to clear a room. This is very hard and I hope I never have to do it. One of the things an Israeli Special Forces trainer said to me was…..

SLOW IS FAST.

In business, we’re always in such a hurry.
We’re in a hurry to hire and we’re in a rush to get to the next point.

When you’re rushing, you can’t see the forest for the trees.
You are amidst the chaos, so often can’t see the decisions you need to make.

“Slow is fast” means taking a step back and understanding that a day of not taking action and actually assessing the situation will save you 10 days of exhausting, pointless action in the wrong direction.

Jocko gives an example of this in his book “Dichotomy of Leadership’.

He talks about how they were in Iraq and had gone in to clear a situation. There was gun fire on them and suddenly the senior person who was meant to make the calls for some reason wasn’t doing it. Everyone had waited for about 2 minutes which is a long time in a gunfight. Jocko was the youngest person in the unit and not sure if he should make a decision so what he did was point his gun to the ceiling and step back to take the time and assess everything that was happening.

By stepping back a couple of feet and disconnecting, he was able to look at the whole situation and see the best decision to make. He then stepped back in and made the call himself. Everybody repeated the call back to him and they took the appropriate action.

The point is he said that the only way he was able to make that call when the senior person in the unit wasn’t, was because he stepped back. From that moment on he practised stepping back and still does it to this day in all parts of his life.

As entrepreneurs sometimes we need to step back in order to continue moving at the rapid speed we know we have to. Don’t be afraid to slow down to speed up.

💥💯 This is the second most valuable lesson I learned from Jocko Willink and Leif Babin that I’d like to share with you.

It is knowing when to train and knowing when to fire a team.

There is a practice in the military that you don’t let a team member go until you’ve given them all the tools and training they need to get the job done.

For a long time I would be very quick to fire people because I was impatient and intolerant.
I would always blame them.

However, since I started doing this work, I realized that wasn’t necessarily the smartest thing to be doing.

Firstly, I became smarter in who I hired.

Secondly, I realized that often I wasn’t putting enough time into training people before letting them go because I was hiring from a place of desperation. I just wanted somebody to take on all this stuff because I was too busy and didn’t have time to actually train them.

I expected them to just know…thought they should be able to read my mind.
Like when I was growing up and my mum would be annoyed with me and say she shouldn’t have to tell me, I should just know what needed doing.

Often when people hire from desperation, they make dumb decisions.
You should hire slow and fire fast.

If you don’t make the right decision in the first place, that’s on you.

Make sure you give them all the tools, training and resources to do the job along with the support and accountability that they need.

If you do this and they still can’t do it because potentially it’s beyond their capacity, then let them go. In terms of a job this isn’t a bad thing because you can’t teach a fish to climb a tree, right?

You have to make sure you put the right people in the right places and once you’ve invested everything you can into that person, if they still can’t get it, it’s okay to either put them in another position or let them go.

It’s your responsibility as a leader in the beginning to make sure you hire the right person, do not hire from a place of desperation and you give them everything they need to win.

I just signed up for a 12 month Extreme Ownership Academy with Jocko Willink and Leif Babin who are two ex Navy SEAL officers. 🥳🤩

The first of 3 massive things I’ve learned so far can be applied in entrepreneurship or just in your own life and it’s based on some of the hardest military training in the world.

They have a philosophy that emotions and feelings do not define your actions.

Now, in my life, one of my biggest struggles has been with anger. I’m a fighter. I’ve punched
people in the face, done martial arts and engaged in hand to hand combat,

I realised that sometimes I will endure a fight longer than necessary because I’m so used to fighting every second to get where I am, and this is a massive asset and why I’m still standing as an entrepreneur after 10 years.

However, because of the dichotomy of any sort of asset, there is something that needs to be balanced within it.

And for me, emotions and feelings used to change how I acted, so the anger and the desire to win a fight with everybody would impact how I showed up and I would make some pretty dumb decisions.

I would be reactive.
I would fight and argue with people.
I would speak to my team terribly.
I would speak to my partner terribly,
I would slam doors and throw things at walls.

This was a very long time ago and even though I’ve done a lot of personal development, I was still finding I would let my reactivity and my frustration that expectations wouldn’t be met dictate how I showed up in my business, with my team and with my clients.

One thing they teach is that most people are letting emotions dictate their life, and they’re using it as an excuse to just continue showing up in a way that doesn’t serve them. Saying I’m sorry I showed up that way but I didn’t sleep last night or I’m a bit stressed out right now is really just a weakness.

This doesn’t mean that if you have extreme trauma, you should push it down. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being your child just died and 1 being you’re just a little bit hungry and maybe you only got 7 hours instead of 10 hours sleep last night, only anything above a 7 needs processing or therapy.
